Aguero doubled up moments later, before making way for the Raheem Sterling show as the City talisman struck in the 58th, 64th and 69th minutes at the Etihad.

Man City player ratings vs Atalanta
GK: Ederson – 6
One solid save early in second half and good positioning to make two decent stops from Ilicic after the hour.
CB: Kyle Walker – 6
Returning from illness but put in a shift and had too much pace for Atalanta’s forward line.
CB: Fernandinho – 5
Clumsy challenge gave away penalty but generally shaped well as the last line of a stretched defence.
CB: Rodri – 5
Little to do but solid enough until pulling up with hamstring trouble just short of half time.
LB: Benjamin Mendy – 5
Harsh booking early, too often left out of position when losing possession up field.
CM: Kevin De Bruyne – 6
Quiet by his standards, shot on 54 minutes well saved, surging run down right set up City’s third.
CM: Ilkay Gundogan – 7
Busy early, great job tidying up the middle and lovely pass for Sterling to hit the fourth.
CM: Phil Foden – 8
Only his second start of the season, brilliant cut back from byline on 25 minutes deserved better, neat feet to assist for third. Sent off for two bookings.
RW: Riyad Mahrez – 5
Offered little threat on right side and superceded as De Bruyne pushed further forward later.
ST: Sergio Aguero – 6
Shot from distance well saved on 24 minutes, blazed over from Foden pass minute later, took goals well.
LW: Raheem Sterling – 9
Constant threat at speed on the left, dazzled all night with close control. Too third goals brilliantly. Superb.
Man City subs
CB: John Stones – 6
Looked more or less back up to speed on a relatively easy night for the back four after he came on.
LB: Joao Cancelo – 6
Showed defensive nous and offered support in attack.
