Liverpool news: Pep Guardiola true intention’s with Sadio Mane accusation | Football | Sport

Jermaine Jenas believes Pep Guardiola’s diving accusation against Liverpool star Sadio Mane was made to put the idea of simulation into the mind of Sunday’s referee Michael Oliver.

Guardiola stoked the fire with Manchester City’s title rivals last weekend when he labelled Mane as a diver.

“Sometimes Mane is diving, sometimes he’s scoring goals in the last minute,” the City boss said after the 2-1 win over Southampton.

Jurgen Klopp promptly responded with a cheeky dig at his opposite number over “tactical fouls”.

Mane meanwhile has called Guardiola “clever” for trying “to get the attention of the referee”.

And Jenas agrees, going on to joke about how VAR will unlikely come to the rescue for the correct call.

“All this talk about Mane diving, you telling me a referee [Oliver] – that’s not in his head going into this game?” Jenas questioned on MOTDx.

“He’s not going to look out for that and think…

“I know we’ve got VAR but who can trust that [laughs].”

Liverpool could move nine points clear of City if they beat Guardiola’s side on Sunday (4.30pm).

And Jenas believes that could already spell the end of City’s challenge to Liverpool at the top of the table.

“I think it is,” he added.

“City have to win this game. It’s as simple as that

“These are two teams that do not lose a lot of games.”

Both teams have injury issues heading into the huge top of the table clash.

Liverpool are still without Joel Matip, meaning Dejan Lovren or Joe Gomez will step up to partner Virgil van Dijk at the heart of defence.

City meanwhile will likely be without David Silva with Ederson also a doubt.
