Arsenal injury update: Four stars in contention to return for Newcastle clash | Football | Sport

Arsenal currently have five first-team players on the sidelines, though four of them could return for the club’s first match since the end of the winter break. The north Londoners, who currently reside in tenth place in the Premier League table,  will welcome relegation battlers Newcastle to the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.

Mikel Arteta’s troops have spent the winter break in Dubai, where they took part in a warm-weather training camp.

Six first-team stars’ participations in Sunday’s match against Newcastle. The players in question are Kieran Tierney, Sead Kolasinac, Reiss Nelson, Bukayo Saka, Cedric Soares and Calum Chambers.

So, will any of quintet be available for Sunday’s visit of the Magpies?

Sead Kolasinac

Bosnia’s Kolasinac is currently in the final stages of recovery from a thigh injury, which he suffered in January.

The 26-year-old has, however, return to training and could be in contention to return to the fold.

And given Arsenal’s lack of options at left-back – which are in part down to Tierney’s absence – Arteta could be tempted to throw Kolasniac back into the mix.

Reiss Nelson

A hamstring injury has kept Nelson on the sidelines for over a month.

The midfielder sustained the ailment – which was expected to keep him out of action for at least six weeks – in the Gunners’ 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.

The 20-year-old, however, did take part in Arsenal’s warm-weather training camp. So he should, in theory, be available for selection.

Bukayo Saka

Saka has been on the sidelines since suffering knocks to his patella and his hip in Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Burnley earlier this month.

The academy graduate has also returned to training and is contention to feature in Sunday’s starting XI.

Cedric Soares

Arsenal’s latest signing is currently recovering from knee ligament damage.

The Portuguese defender – who was signed to alleviate the north Londoners’ defensive crisis –  is expected to be match fit in the coming weeks.

Soares provided an update on his recovery in an Instagram post from Dubai, which included pictures of him on an exercise bike.

The snap’s accompanying caption read :“Using the sunny energy in Dubai to recover strong. I can’t wait to be back on the pitch and help the squad achieve our goals. Let’s go Gunners!”

Soares’ post could suggest he’s ready to make his debut for the Arsenal, who have acquired his services on loan for the remainder of the season.

Calum Chambers

Chambers is currently recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which he ruptured in Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in December.

The former Fulham loanee is expected to be on the sidelines for a minimum of six months. And as such, he won’t be back in match-day squad until the start of the 2020-21 season.
