Man Utd news: Chelsea transfer has stopped one United star from leaving – Mariner | Football | Sport
Those are the views of former England and Arsenal striker Paul Mariner, who now works as a pundit for ESPN.
David De Gea has been repeatedly linked with an exit from Manchester United in recent years.
He famously came close to joining Real Madrid in 2015 but for a faulty fax machine to put a stop to the deal late in the transfer window.
Real’s interest never failed to disappear though for the man many regard as the best goalkeeper in the world.
However, this summer the La Liga giants splashed the cash on Thibaut Courtois, whose contract at Chelsea expired next summer.
De Gea’s contract at United expires in two summers time and there have been question marks over his future.
But Mariner was asked if he could see De Gea leaving United anytime soon and was unequivocal with his response.
“For me, if he was ever going to leave, it would be the last summer gone,” he told ESPN FC.
“I just don’t understand this.
“Courtois is at Real Madrid sitting on his backside.
“Everybody else seems to be fairly well set with their keepers.
“I just can’t see it, I just cannot see this. I say it’s a miss.”
Meanwhile, Manchester United have been linked with a move for AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli.
Mariner reckons it would be a good signing if United found a partner for the Italian.
He said of Romagnoli: “I like him, I like him a lot. But the problem is, when you have a player like Romagnoli going into United, who’s he going to play with?
“He needs somebody alongside him to solidify that defence. That’s what Manchester United have not got.”
