Real Madrid news: Zinedine Zidane to RETURN and replace Julen Lopetegui? Fresh claim made | Football | Sport
That is the view of ESPN FC pundit and former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley.
Zidane left Real Madrid at the end of last season after winning his third Champions League in three seasons.
The Frenchman is yet to find a job since quitting the Bernabeu but has been linked with many different roles.
Two clubs Zidane has reportedly been on the radar of are Manchester United and Bayern Munich, whose respective managers are under pressure after poor starts to the season.
But Real themselves have struggled under Lopetegui, who left his role as Spain boss on the eve of the World Cup.
They are fourth in La Liga having already lost two games and were beaten 1-0 by CSKA Moscow in the Champions League last week.
So could Zidane return to Real if Lopetegui was to get the axe?
Burley admits it would be unlikely but says it should not be ruled out.
“I don’t know if he would go back to Real Madrid if Lopetegui got the sack,” he said.
“I mean, stranger things have happened. I think it’s unlikely.”
Meanwhile, Burley believes Real will target Paris Saint-Germain stars Neymar and Kylian Mbappe ahead of Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.
That is despite Hazard revealing his wish of playing for the La Liga side.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if any player was keen on going to Real Madrid,” Burley said.
“Eden Hazard has touched on that over the last 48 hours discussing his contract situation at Chelsea.
“Real Madrid are going to be looking at people like, first of all, Neymar, who it’s been mooted that they want, then Mbappe.
“There’s been talk about Eden Hazard but he sort of fits into the ‘if there’s a sign that we’re not getting Neymar or Mbappe, we could play out cards with Eden Hazard’.”
