Chelsea players would not have liked what Sarri said before Man City clash – Souness | Football | Sport
That is the opinion of Sky Sports pundit and Liverpool legend Graeme Souness.
In the build up to the match Sarri claimed there was no better team than City in Europe.
“At the moment, in my opinion, Manchester City is the best team in Europe,” the Italian said.
“[Pep] Guardiola is in the third season in the Premier League. We have to try to reduce the gap.”
But Souness says as a player you would much rather hear your manager praise you than the opposition.
“You don’t want to hear that,” Souness said.
“Chelsea have big players, they’ll have enormous egos and so they should have.
“You don’t want to here your manager talking up the opposition saying ‘they’re the best at this’ and ‘the best at that’. Best midfield, best team, best defensive line.
“You don’t want to hear that, I want him to talk about me, I want him to believe in me.”
Souness says Chelsea had to perform better at the Etihad than they did last season.
City ran out 1-0 winners over the Blues last March.
“When they came here last year I think they killed themselves with the way they played here,” he continued.
“They turned up with a group of players that are used to winning things, a group of players that feel as though they are as good as anyone.
“And they turned up here last year and never made a game of it. They just sat and tried to nick the game.
“As a big player you don’t want that, you want your manager to say ‘you’re better than them, go out and show you’re better than them’.
“Don’t be scared of them like they were last year.”
City showed their quality by running out 6-0 winners at the Etihad.
