Espanyol: Welcome to Spain, Wu Lei
Espanyol The opinion of M. Carmen Torres
Espanyol’s match against Rayo Vallecano revealed a lot about the Catalan team. It showed that they are capable of the best and of the worst, that Sergi Darder is an artist and that Wu Lei is a great talent. The 27-year-old only just arrived from China and hadn’t been playing due to a shoulder injury, but he was one of the most impressive players against Villarreal and was then similarly important against Rayo Vallecano. He promises a lot.
The Chinese forward has amazed everyone, except perhaps for those in the sporting department who signed him. His new teammates are even surprised with the ability, play and boldness of the player the club paid two million euros for.
“He is adapting,” Sergi Darder said after the Rayo victory. “When he arrived we thought we’d wait and see, because he had been out of action and because it would have been normal for him to need some time to adapt to this new league. We didn’t expect that he’d be so decisive so quickly.”
The injury to Pablo Piatti could see Wu Lei given significant playing time in the coming matches. The language barrier isn’t proving to be a problem for him on the pitch, while his translator is also helping with his adaptation.
The Espanyol fans are already celebrating this player. He was cheered when he started to warm up during his RCDE Stadium debut and the crowd feels a connection with him. He was already a major star in his own country and now he is starting to be one in LaLiga Santander. Welcome, Wu Lei.
