Man City boss Pep Guardiola urged to start ONE player to defeat Tottenham on Saturday | Football | Sport
That is according to Arsenal legend Martin Keown.
The German international has started just four of Manchester City’s last nine league games and been substituted in all but one of them.
It has led to a patchy run of domestic form in which he has scored one goal and laid on one assist since February.
The German established himself as one of the most potent wingers in the Premier League last season, notching 10 times and creating 15 goals.
Despite less opportunity this term, Sane has still had 19 goal involvements and should be the first name on Guardiola’s teamsheet after the disappointment against Spurs in midweek, when he was only introduced late on.
“[Pep Guardiola] should start by putting Leroy Sane in his line-up,” Keown told MailOnline.
“I understand it is difficult for Pep Guardiola to pick 11 players, given the squad at his disposal, but Tottenham must have been delighted with his decision to barely use Sane in the Champions League.
“The 23-year-old only came on in the 89th minute of the first leg at the new Tottenham Stadium.
“Then he came on in the 84th minute of the second leg at the Etihad Stadium.
“That’s not nearly enough time for him to make his mark. The City youngster is an outstanding talent and it’s time to use him.”
Keown is backing City to outdo the Lilywhites at Saturday lunchtime after the dramatic disappointment of midweek.
“The manner in which they lost to Tottenham, it was gut-wrenching for Manchester City’s players, but Guardiola will want them raring to go on Saturday,” he reasoned.
“The good thing about facing Tottenham so soon after losing to them is they do not have to wait long to get their own back.
“City will want to show what they are made of now. The only way to do that is by returning to winning ways.”
