Review of Penn State QBs as Stevens transfers

Penn State will move forward without its most experienced quarterback following confirmation that fifth-year senior Tommy Stevens will depart the program.

Stevens’ father, Tom, acknowledged his son will complete his college football career elsewhere during a Thursday discussion with John McGonigal of the Centre Daily Times.

“He really went back and forth with this,” the elder Stevens told McGonigal. “It’s been really, really, really difficult. But he understands that it’s a business at the end of the day.”

The Nittany Lions’ three oldest scholarship quarterbacks entering 2018 preseason camp are no longer playing with the program. Three-year starter Trace McSorley is one week away from learning his NFL draft fate, while Jake Zembiec announced a medical retirement last August prior to his third campaign at Penn State.

This leaves the Nittany Lions with a young position room in which redshirt Sean Clifford — now considered the strong favorite to start — is the only quarterback credited with a collegiate pass attempt. It’s a group that features two true freshmen and two walk-ons.

With Stevens moving on, there are names to know as a new-look Nittany Lions QB depth chart develops. Let’s review each and what led them to this point.
