Simms and Gibson elect to transfer

Two Oregon defensive players have chosen to leave the Oregon football program, a source confirmed to Friday afternoon.

Oregon junior linebacker Keith Simms and sophomore defensive back Billy Gibson have elected to leave the program. The news was first reported by The Oregonian’s James Crepea.

Neither player has been at practice this week, the team’s final week of Spring Football. The team will hold their spring game on April 20th, and neither player was included on the rosters for either spring game.

Simms spent all of the spring football practices running with the third-team defense behind multiple underclassmen at the same position. Simms was a regular special teams player as a true freshman and as a redshirt sophomore.

Gibson played as a true freshman for the Ducks in 2017 but then saw action in just four games in 2018. He redshirted during the 2018 season because of the new rule passed by the NCAA allowing players who play in four games or less a chance to redshirt. His departure was credited toward being far from home in Florida and also falling behind on the depth chart at the safety position.

Gibson spent almost all of the spring football working with the program’s third-string defense and was behind multiple players who were younger or the same year as Gibson.

Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal will speak with the media on Saturday after the spring game and will address the transfers. Oregon’s spring game will start at 2 p.m. and will be broadcast by the Pac-12 Networks.

Gibson and Simms are now the second and third players to elect to transfer from the Oregon football program during this spring. Earlier this year, redshirt sophomore wide receiver Demetri Burch elected to leave the program for more playing time at another school. Burch and Gibson were part of Willie Taggart’s only recruiting class at Oregon.
