Why Everton want Man Utd to sell Romelu Lukaku for big money this summer | Football | Sport
Lukaku left Everton to join Manchester United in July 2017 for £75million.
The Belgian was Jose Mourinho’s first choice striker but that has changed under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who favours Marcus Rashford.
Lukaku and his representatives have flirted with a move away from Old Trafford this season after two mediocre campaigns.
And The Telegraph are now reporting that the Red Devils will listen to offers for the 25-year-old.
That is good news for Everton because terms of their deal with United stipulate that they net an additional £5m if the player leaves this summer.
That would be more than welcome for Everton, who have spent frivolously since Lukaku’s departure to varying success.
His £20m replacement, Cenk Tosun, is not liked by Marco Silva, who favours academy graduate Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the lone frontman.
The chance of that seven-figure sum dropping in the Toffees’ accounts will depends on potential suitors’ willingness to meet or at least offer similar wages to Lukaku, whose current £255,000-a-week contract expires in June 2022.
United will also want to recoup most, if not all, of the £75m spent on Lukaku, whose reputation as an elite striker has slightly worsened despite a fair record of 42 goals in 93 appearances.
The striker switched agents to Federico Pastorello in December and the Monaco-based representative said to Sky Sports in early April: “It’s his second season here and he will still have three years on his contract until the end.
“Let’s see. He’s someone who loves to know a different culture, a different football.
“He sees a way to have a career playing in different countries because he would like to win some trophies and prove himself and say to his children: ‘I won there and I won there and I won there. I was a very good player in all the top championships.’
“So let’s see, the future is really very open but, at the moment, we don’t discuss about that because really the season is in a big moment.”
The Telegraph claim Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich are keeping tabs on Lukaku, with the former ostensibly the preferred location, judging by Pastorelllo’s words.
“He likes Italy,” the agent also said. “When he was a child he followed a lot the Italian league.
“Everybody agrees today the Premier League is the best but years ago Italy was the best and they were the dreams for the younger footballer players.
“Teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona of course attract any champion so he sees also in La Liga one day. Bundesliga for sure is a very good championship.”
