Miguel Almiron: Why Newcastle star CRIED as he was subbed off in Southampton showdown | Football | Sport
Newcastle took a 2-0 lead through Ayoze Perez on Tyneside before Mario Lemina got one back for the away side.
Almiron was then withdrawn from the action midway through the second-half, prompting tears from the Paraguayan.
The 25-year-old had a problem with his hamstring, with fears that he could be ruled out for the season.
The former Atalanta United man joined the club in January for £21million – a club record fee.
Although he has so far failed to score for his new club, Almiron has impressed fans in his short spell with the Toon.
Rafa Benitez praised his new forward earlier in the month, and referred to his scoring drought as ‘fine’.
He said: ”He is doing OK. I do not see any anxiety just because he is not scoring. He is fine,” Benitez said.
“You talk about [Salomon] Rondon, [Ayoze] Perez and Almiron and they play well together.
“Maybe he [Almiron] has more pace going forward causing more problems for defenders, and that is beneficial for Rondon and Ayoze.”
One player who played in part in the transfer was DeAndre Yedlin, who was aware of his fellow former MLS player.
“I knew what type of player he was before he came here.
“He’s a great player. He’s skilful on the ball, he’s quick and he’s creative.”
