Man Utd told to copy Liverpool transfer plans as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to spend | Football | Sport

The Red Devils are ready to splash the cash this summer to mount a Premier League title charge next season.

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has confirmed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be backed in the summer transfer window.

Solskjaer is said to be eyeing five transfers to transform his United side ahead of next season.

United are also looking at appointing a director of football to oversee all transfers after a torrid few years in the market.

And Sky Sports pundit Smith claims the Red Devils can learn from their rivals Liverpool and City over their transfer policy.

The former Arsenal man also reckons United need to axe numerous stars in a big shake up at Old Trafford.

“Can they get some players off the book? Can they sell [Paul] Pogba for big money to give themselves more cash in the transfer market?” Smith told Sky Sports.

“Can they sell [Alexis] Sanchez? That could be difficult due to his wages, which is a problem.

“And finally, is Solskjaer the right person to attract big players? I think the manager does play a big part in the recruitment.

“United are still a very attractive club to join and they pay huge salaries, but they are not in the Champions League so that does make it more difficult.

“It’s going to be very hard for them because there are a lot of players at the club that aren’t good enough.

“They need to turn over the squad which is so difficult. Then you have the whole sporting director or director of football issue.

“At Liverpool they have got it brilliantly right, Manchester City have done it well too, they both know what they are doing in that regard.

“At United there are big question marks over who is making the decisions, so they need to sort that out before they think about what they need in terms of players.”

United missed out on the top four this season, with Solskjaer’s side being forced to watch Liverpool and City battle for the Premier League title.
