Manchester City are damaging football with ‘state sponsored’ cash, says La Liga president

The ECA is chaired by Andrea Agnelli, who is also the chairman of Juventus football club. By limiting access to new competitors, the proposals would ensure that the participation payments for playing in the Champions League remained in the hands of around 24 clubs.

Such a move would “harm the value of national leagues: no matter if they are big or small”, said Seifert.

Both Richard Masters, the interim Premier League chief executive, and Arsenal managing director Vinai Venkatesham also expressed opposition to any Champions League overhaul or Super League. Masters told how Britain’s top tier will discuss its opposition to the plans at the next meeting with all the clubs on June 5.

Venkatesham, meanwhile, told the FT summit: “These conversations are ongoing, but what I would say is that we feel that the absolute bedrock as a club is playing in the world’s number one league in the world’s number one sport, and that’s the Premier League. So if there are changes proposed to European football that we feel would damage the Premier League or impact on its position of primacy, then we would be concerned about that. European football is of course important to Arsenal so we are probing the conversations with interest and making sure Arsenal’s voice and the Premier League’s voice is heard.”
