Aston Villa transfers: Club in pole position for big signing and the latest on Mings, Ampadu, Wilson and every other player linked
Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips features highly on Aston Villa’s transfer wish-list – and they’re ready to test the Whites’ resolve with an official bid.
Villa confirmed the release of veteran midfield pair Mile Jedinak and Glenn Whelan at the end of the promotion winning season, having both seen out their contracts on a high as they contributed to the Lions’ collective success.
Smith is keen on freshening up his options in midfield as the club prepares for its return to the Premier League, and Leeds destroyer Phillips is seen as an ideal fit.
The Telegraph claim that Villa and Smith, who will look to add up to seven new signings after capturing Jota and Anwar El Ghazi, will offer up to £14m for Phillips.
Despite missing out on promotion – they were defeated by Derby County in the play-off semi-finals – Leeds are understood to be holding out to closer to £20m.
Phillips, who was a crucial cog in the Leeds side that finished third this past campaign.
He sat the deepest of a midfield that also boasted Pablo Hernandez, Adam Forshaw and Mateusz Klich and played a role in both meetings against the claret and blues, as the Yorkshire side took four points from a possible six.
The 23-year-old, who is Leeds born and bred and has been a constant in the side for the last three seasons, has also attracted interest from fellow promoted side Norwich City, Bournemouth, Southampton and, more recently, West Midlands rivals Wolves.
He played 46 matches last term and flourished under Marcelo Bielsa, but Leeds failed to tie him down to a new contract.
Phillips has just two years remaining on his current deal at Elland Road and now will surely be tempted by the offer of Premier League football, should any of the aforementioned interested parties test Leeds’ resolve
