Robert Pires reveals what Arsenal need if Unai Emery is to succeed – ‘Everybody knows’ | Football | Sport
That’s the view of Gunners hero Robert Pires, who is taking part in Soccer Aid this evening.
Emery is believed to have a transfer budget of just £40million this summer.
That’s despite the manager looking to improve his side having finished fifth in the Premier League.
Emery has acknowledged his need to spend, and Pires believes extra funds is the only chance Emery has.
“I read that Arsenal have a small envelope for transfers, only £40m,” Pires said.
“My opinion is that it isn’t enough.
“If you want to build a good team, you need to spend a lot of money, especially in the Premier League.
“I respect Arsenal’s position and the owner, but everybody knows that if you want to win the Premier League, you need to spend a lot of money.
“All the top clubs want to sign great players, but if you want a great player it costs a lot of money.”
Emery could boost his transfer kitty with sales of players.
Aaron Ramsey has left on a free while there is speculation over the futures of Lucas Torreira and Laurent Koscielny.
And Emery knows he will need to use the players already in his squad.
He recently said: ”I think we can improve first, by spending money to achieve players.
“In the past the club have done great work in watching players, finding and signing young players and developing our players in the academy.
“I have big respect for our work, for our players in the academy.
“I want to develop the players here — giving them progress to achieve something at a big club like we are.
“We can also achieve [buy] some players who are in other teams, who can come here and give us this performance—like [Virgil] Van Dijk with Liverpool.”
