Liverpool hero Aldridge delivers verdict on De Ligt transfer, tells Klopp to sign one star | Football | Sport
That’s according to Reds hero John Aldridge, who admits Jurgen Klopp needs defensive reinforcements.
A partner for Virgil van Dijk at centre-back could be a priority for Jurgen Klopp this summer.
Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all spent time in the centre of defence this season as Liverpool finished second in the Premier League.
There are doubts over Lovren’s Anfield future while full-back Alberto Moreno is departing.
And with the Spaniard leaving Merseyside, Aldridge believes Klopp needs a replacement but it won’t be De Ligt.
“While I said in last week’s Sunday World that a deal to sign Virgil van Dijk’s Dutch central defensive partner Matthijs de Ligt would be great for Liverpool, the money he and his agent appear to be demanding means he will end up elsewhere,” Aldridge told The Sunday World.
“Klopp needs to focus his defensive reinforcement by signing cover at left-back following the departure of Alberto Moreno, as a longterm injury to Andy Robertson would be a major blow given they don’t have a quality stand-in.”
Ajax are expected to ask around £70million for rising star De Ligt.
Barcelona and Manchester United have also been linked to the young Dutchman.
But he himself was unsure where his future lays after helping Netherlands to second in the Nations League.
“I don’t know, I don’t know,” De Ligt said when asked where he will be next season.
“Now I am going on vacation and I just take a rest, relax and then I will see.
“When you rest, you have enough time to think so that’s good.”
Liverpool are yet to make a signing this summer with the transfer window closing on August 8.
