Who is Matt Judge? United’s transfer negotiator in profile
Manchester United are preparing the ground for a summer rebuild, with Daniel James’ move from Swansea marking the club’s new-found focus on recruiting hungry, young, British players.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is understood to be targeting a centre-back, right-back and central midfielder to strengthen a side that contrived to finish sixth in the Premier League last season and miss out on a Champions League berth.
High-profile arrivals have dominated United’s transfer windows in the six years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, with Paul Pogba becoming the club’s record signing at £89 million in the summer of 2016 before Alexis Sanchez signed a deal to become the highest-paid player in Premier League history 18 months later.
United’s executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, has become the club’s figure-head in the post-Ferguson era but the former investment banker has delegated the negotiating of transfers and contracts to Matt Judge, the club’s head of corporate development, since 2016.
Unlike Woodward, the Glazer family’s point of contact at United, Judge keeps an extremely low profile for the position he holds at Old Trafford. Like Woodward, he divides his time between United’s Mayfair office, in London, and the Aon Training Complex.
