What Man Utd transfer target Harry Maguire thinks of club not playing in Champions League | Football | Sport
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants Harry Maguire to join his side this summer as the Norwegian embarks on an overhaul on his quad who finished sixth in the Premier League last season.
Solskjaer has identified the need to improve United’s defence and wants add a world-class defender to his new-look squad.
Last season United conceded 54 goals in the league, which was their highest total in 40 years.
And despite only being able to offer Europa League football next season, according to the Daily Mail, Maguire is understood to still be happy at the prospect of joining United despite the club failing to qualify for the Champions League.
Although Maguire signed a five-year £75,000-a-week deal with Leicester City last September, the centre-back is understood to have expressed a desire to leave the club.
However, it is understood the defender is concerned about the prospect of being priced out of a move away from the King Power Stadium.
Leicester want a world-record fee for the 26-year-old and are using the sale of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool for £75million 18 months ago as a barometer for their price.
Although United have been interested in Maguire for quite some time, Manchester City are also monitoring the player’s situation.
City boss Pep Guardiola is reportedly considering making a move for Maguire as a replacement for Vincent Kompany, after the Belgian centre-back opted to join his boyhood club Anderlecht as player-manager for next season.
However, they are believed to be unwilling to meet the Foxes current price with Maguire being valued at upwards of £85m.
Solskjaer wants Maguire to be the new leader at Old Trafford and it is understood the United board are willing to back their manager by sanctioning a big-money move, as well as offering a lucrative contract to the England international.
As talks continue between the clubs United are reportedly optimistic a compromise can be reached at £75m.
Leicester and United have both already been busy during the summer transfer window, with the Foxes announcing the arrival of midfielder Youri Tielemans this week, in a deal worth £40m from Moncao.
While Solskjaer has already spent a significant proportion of his transfer budget on the signings of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace for £50m and Daniel James from Championship side Swansea for £15m.
And with United looking to raise funds to allow Solskjaer to go after more transfer targets, one player who could be on his way out of Old Trafford is striker Romelu Lukaku.
The 26-year-old wants to leave United after falling behind Marcus Rashford in the pecking order for the No 9 role, with Inter Milan interested in the Belgian.
However, one sticking point is that United want at least the £75m they paid for Lukaku two years ago, but Inter have so far have struggled to offer such an amount.
The Nerazzurri had previously offered a player-swap and considered a loan deal, but United are holding out for a straight cash deal, with the possibility of using the money to fund a move for Maguire.
