Man Utd nightmare has seen Ed Woodward miss out on two massive transfers this summer | Football | Sport

Manchester United finished sixth in the Premier League table last season, missing out on a spot in next season’s Champions League as a result.

And that has hit the Red Devils hard so far this summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer targets title glory at the first time of asking.

Woodward has delivered two signings for Manchester United so far in the forms of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who touched down from Swansea and Crystal Palace this summer.

The Red Devils want more, though, with Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire and Sean Longstaff in their sights.

Had United finished in the top four, however, this summer may have had a far more exciting feel to it.

And that’s because of Jadon Sancho and Matthijs de Ligt.

Both players have been deterred from the prospect of moving to United while they continue to fall behind their Premier League and European rivals.

A few months ago, before the end of the season, Solskjaer wanted Sancho to spearhead his attack.

The England international was tearing up the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund at the time, establishing himself as one of Europe’s best wide players.

With United needing stardust on the right of their attack, Solskjaer wanted Woodward to sign the talented teen.

The 19-year-old was initially interested in making the move to Old Trafford, despite his Manchester City past.

Yet when they finished outside of the top four, Sancho decided to stay at Dortmund instead.

He did not want to join a United team so uncertain and one whose fans are losing patience by the day.

And a second transfer United could have sealed had they secured Champions League football was that of De Ligt.

Initially, the Ajax star was enchanted by the idea of helping to reawaken a sleeping giant of the game.

That’s despite United not having any Champions League football to offer.

However, De Ligt is now poised to join Juventus. Cristiano Ronaldo, the almost-guarantee of silverware and a blockbuster pay packet has helped make his decision.

United had still been hoping to sign the teenager this summer.

But Woodward has missed out on both the Holland international and Sancho as a result of their nightmare end to last season.

Had United landed both players, some would be tipping them to challenge for the Premier League title.

But that looks a long way off and, currently, so do deals for Fernandes, Longstaff and Maguire as well.
