Newcastle United transfer budget revealed with new signings to be announced ‘quickly’ | Football | Sport
Newcastle announced the appointment of Steve Bruce as their new manager on Wednesday.
Bruce has replaced fan-favourite Rafa Benitez, signing a three-year deal at St James’ Park.
Newcastle have sold strikers Ayoze Perez and Joselu, with last season’s top scorer Salomon Rondon set to follow Benitez to China after his loan spell came to an end.
The Magpies are yet to make any new signings themselves but that could be about to change.
Sky Sports reporter Tim Thornton says Hoffenheim striker Joelinton is in talks with the club over a possible deal.
Thornton says there could be up to four new forwards heading to Newcastle before the window shuts on August 8.
“He will have a healthier budget than some of his predecessors, that’s for sure,” Thornton said of Bruce.
“It’s our understanding he will have £50m plus the £30m from the sale of Ayoze Perez and then the £11m that was left over from last season.
“So up to £91m to spend and some of that spending could happen pretty quickly as well.
“Hoffenheim striker Joelinton we understand is in talks, concrete talks, with Newcastle over a potential move.
“He scored seven goals in the Bundesliga last season.
“But certainly strikers are the priority for Newcastle. They’ve lost their front line from last season.
“They could need as many as three or four new strikers, with Ayoze Perez moving on to Leicester City, Salomon Rondon leaving and also Joselu as well.
“So goals will be absolutely key for Steve Bruce.
“But this is a squad that Rafa Benitez felt needed strengthening before he left as well.
“So certainly between now and the transfer window closing in 22 days time, Steve Bruce is going to have to get very, very busy.”
