Arsenal news: Key ace reveals injury scare that may worry Unai Emery on international duty | Football | Sport
Granit Xhaka has handed Arsenal an injury scare as he claims he has been dealing with Achilles tendon pain for weeks.
Xhaka was on international duty with Switzerland and played for 74 minutes in his country’s 4-0 win against Gibraltar on Sunday.
The Gunners star, though, revealed after the match that he has been playing through the pain with an Achilles injury for quite some time this season.
Xhaka said: “I’ve been suffering from Achilles tendon pain for a few weeks now.
“I felt it during the game.
“It hurts now, but it should be okay otherwise.”
Arsenal already have Kieran Tierney, Hector Bellerin, Dinos Mavropanos and Joe Willock on the injured list.
Tierney, Bellerin and Mavropanos have been linked with a return to action some time this month.
There is no official word as to whether or not Xhaka will take some time off to nurse his injury.
This comes after the Switzerland international was widely criticised for his performance in the north London derby against Tottenham.
The midfielder was slammed for his clumsy challenge on Son Heung-min which led to Spurs’ second goal in the 2-2 draw at the Emirates.
Manchester United legend and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville was one of his critics for that “disgraceful” tackle.
The Arsenal player knows he made a mistake and isn’t too bothered with the reaction.
Xhaka said: “It’s part of football, there are a lot of people that talk a lot.
“I cannot influence anything and I do not want to.
“It is not my business.
“My job is to perform on the pitch.
“I know that I made a mistake in the penalty.”
“But nobody talks about the many opportunities we have made, only about the mistakes.”
