Liverpool news: ‘Stick him in for Mane’ – How Raheem Sterling would get into Reds team | Football | Sport

Liverpool would have to find a way to get Raheem Sterling into their starting XI if he was part of their squad, according to radio commentator and presenter Sam Matterface.

Sterling has taken his game to another level since leaving Liverpool for Manchester City in 2015.

The 24-year-old enjoyed his best goalscoring season last term with 25 goals in all competitions and has netted seven times in his last seven caps for England.

Matterface and talkSPORT presenter Darren Gough were debating whether Sterling was good enough to break into the Liverpool attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

Former England cricketer Gough said: “I’ve been thinking about this, with Sterling, and obviously I’m a massive fan of him and I think the way he’s improved under [Pep] Guardiola is fantastic.

“But when it comes down to it, I’m sure we’ve got a lot of Liverpool fans [listening], would he get into the Liverpool top three?

“We had this debate last week, Firmino they think is the ultimate, he’s the one who makes everything click together, right.

“So you’ve got Salah and Mane, does he get in instead of one of them two? Who does he get instead of? Don’t sit on that fence.”

Matterface initially claimed he would replace Mane with Sterling but ultimately said Sterling would definitely be in the team if he had to pick just three out of the four forwards.

“Would he get in the team? [Firmino] is [the ultimate], he’s brilliant, absolutely,” Matterface replied.

“I would rotate the three of them but I’d actually stick him in for Mane.

“Do you know what I might even stick him in for Salah, I can’t make my mind up.

“But I’ll tell you what I can make my mind up on, I’d get him in the team. I would get him in the team because I think he’s that good.

“I think he’s developed into an absolutely top-level player and I do believe that he has got the opportunity to become one of the best players in the world.”
