Liverpool news: Trent Alexander-Arnold labelled England’s best but must improve one thing | Football | Sport
Trent Alexander-Arnold was the best right-back in the recent England squad but the Liverpool man must improve defensively, claims Lee Dixon.
Alexander-Arnold started England’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Kosovo on Tuesday after Kieran Tripper was preferred in the win over Bulgaria on Saturday.
Ben Chilwell also came in at left-back for the visit of Kosovo in place of Danny Rose.
Dixon believes Alexander-Arnold and Chilwell are England’s best options going forward on the right and left of the defence.
But the former Arsenal and England right-back wants them both, and their backups, to work on their first objective, which is to prevent the opposition from scoring.
“Obviously [Kyle] Walker’s experienced and he’s not in the squad,” Dixon said on ITV.
“I think in the squad these two [Alexander-Arnold and Chilwell] are the best for me.
“Alexander-Arnold, his season last year was phenomenal going forward, he’s learning the game defensively.
“I’m a big fan of Chilwell as well at left-back, he’s going to be a top, top left-back.
“He’s playing in a side as well at club level that’s got options.
“You look at the way Leicester are playing, they’ve got that little No 10 in [James] Maddison, they’ve got wide players, they’ve got balls over the top, so he’s playing all sorts of passes.
“All of them, without a doubt, all of them, it’s going back old school, still got to nail down the basics of what they’re in the team for and that’s to stop the ball going in the net. They can all work on that.
“It does [irritate me] a little bit and I’m throwing my old hat in but ultimately they are defenders and I think all of them, it’s the same every time a young player gets in the side, you look at that and go ‘yeah, but defensively…’
“Get that right first and they’ve still got a bit to learn, all of them.”
