Arsenal news: Former star sealed deadline day transfer to ‘get pleasure playing again’ | Football | Sport
Henrikh Mkhitaryan knows that he was struggling in English football and therefore believes his move to Roma on deadline day was fully justified.
The Armenian completed a surprise switch to Serie A just a day after playing in the north London derby draw against Tottenham.
Mkhitaryan struggled to make an impact at the Emirates Stadium since arriving in January 2018.
Now he puts that down to the fact he fell out of love with football towards the end of his spell in England.
“I have to enjoy playing football, no matter the place. In England, I no longer felt happy,” he said.
“I got a call from my agent and I wanted to come, because it was a great opportunity for me. I didn’t even have a discussion with my agent about money.
“Maybe I was not fitting so well in English football, so I think a change was good.”
Mkhitaryan has joined Roma on a season-long loan which includes an option to buy at the end of the campaign.
But the 30-year-old has been forced to play out wide for both United and Arsenal, which has limited how much he can influence a game.
“The last month at Arsenal I was not happy,” he added.
“That’s why I said it was better to come to Roma and to get happy and to get the pleasure from playing football again.
“Now I am in Rome and I focus on them. This is not a step backwards as great football is played here.
“I wanted to change scenery and for me it is an opportunity to be seized.”
