Celtic and Rangers told the positions they must sign in January transfer window | Football | Sport

Former Celtic striker Craig Beattie thinks Rangers are serious title challengers this season and because of that he predicts the January transfer window this season will be important for both clubs.

Celtic are looking for a ninth straight Scottish Premiership title but the 35-year-old also believes that Rangers should not be underestimated this season.

Both clubs have displayed some fantastic attacking form this season, with Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard and Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos both scoring plenty of goals.

However, Beattie thinks both clubs should look to sign another striker in case something happens to either’s main attacking threat.

“Celtic need to strengthen in January,” said Beattie.

“Both need to strengthen, if I’m being honest.

“Rangers need to strengthen in terms of numbers because if something was to happen to Morelos then you’re relying on Defoe to play all the matches but Celtic really need to strengthen if something was to happen Edouard.

“One or possibly two strikers.”

Morelos already has 22 goals this season in all competitions, while Edouard scored his 12th of the season against Motherwell last weekend.

And while Beattie wouldn’t be drawn into which striker he thought was better, he did admit that he thought Edouard was more important to Celtic.

“At the minute, Celtic are very light up front with the exception of Edouard,” Beattie added.

“So should he get injured or something happens to him, I think Edouard is more valuable at this point.

“The goals Alfredo Morelos has been scoring – not just the numbers but the quality – has been absolutely exceptional.

“His disciplinary record appears to have been sorted and now he’s free scoring. The standard is fabulous. 22 goals in 19 starts, that’s 11 in Europe as well.

“Alfredo Morelos is doing it on all fronts and has been a real find for Rangers.

“To mention Jermain Defoe, we’ve been singing Alfredo Morelos’ praises but Defoe’s actually got more league goals than Morelos which is quite unbelievable considering Morelos has played more games.”

Celtic currently sit atop of the table with Rangers in second place but the sides are equal on points and are only separated by a goal difference of just one.

Both clubs now have two weeks off due to the international break with Celtic taking on Livingston and Rangers facing Hamilton when the league resumes at the end of November.
