Manchester City will not be appealing Bernardo Silva’s one-match ban for his controversial tweet involving Benjamin Mendy – though they are furious at the player’s punishment, according to The Mirror.

The FA have slapped the Portugal star with the ban alongside a £50,000 fine, which will see him miss the Premier League visit of Chelsea a week on Saturday.

Silva, 25, has also been ordered to undertake an education programme after pleading guilty to an FA charge of misconduct.

The post in question was deleted just 46 minutes after it was published, with a follow-up post reading: “Can’t even joke with a friend these days.”

The FA statement read: “Bernardo Silva has been suspended for one first team competitive fixture, fined £50,000 and must complete face-to-face education after admitting a breach of FA Rule E3.

“The Manchester City midfielder’s social media activity on 22 September 2019 breached FA Rule E3(1.

“As it was insulting and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute, and constituted an “Aggravated Breach”, which is defined in FA Rule E3(2), as it included reference, whether expressed or implied, to race and/or colour and/or ethnic origin.”

Pep Guardiola had previously defended his player his actions, but understood why some viewers would have been left offended.

He claimed that Silva and Mendy are very close, and that the tweet was nothing more than a joke.

“If someone is offended, I can understand it,” he said.

“Bernardo is maybe going to take a lesson and it won’t happen again.

“I know the intention of Bernardo. It was just a joke.

“Benjamin is like a brother to Bernardo.

“It is the same the other way. It is what I see every day in training.”

City are set to take on Chelsea after a disappointing defeat at Anfield last weekend left them eight points behind Liverpool in the Premier League table, with Jurgen Klopp hoping to stop his rivals from winning a third consecutive title.
