‘It’s a possibility… I don’t know if I will keep talking about it’: Ronald Koeman again underlines desire to take over as Barcelona manager after Euro 2020

  • Ronald Koeman is determined to take over as Barcelona boss after Euro 2020
  • It emerged there is a clause in his Holland contract to leave after the tournament
  • Koeman represented Barcelona as a player and has a strong affinity to the club

Ronald Koeman has once again reiterated his desire to take over as Barcelona manager following Euro 2020.

The Holland boss confirmed earlier in November that a clause in his contract, allowing him to leave for free, only becomes active upon the conclusion of the summer tournament.

With pressure building on Barcelona’s current manager Ernesto Valverde, and the strong affinity Koeman has with a club he represented between 1989 and 1995, he remains one of the primary candidates to take over.

Koeman won 10 major trophies with the Catalan club as a player and he says they are the only club that could persuade him to leave the Dutch national team set-up.

‘(Joining Barcelona) is a possibility, but only after Euro 2020,’ Koeman said.

‘I don’t know if I’ll keep (talking about the Barcelona role) in the future because it’s a bit strange to speak about the possibility of going to the club while you’re the Netherlands coach.’

Barcelona remain top of LaLiga but have made a rocky start to their title defence which in turn has seen pressure build on Valverde.

Shock defeats by Athletic Bilbao, Granada and Levante have raised question marks on his position, as well as the 0-0 draw with Slavia Prague in the Champions League.

For now, Koeman is focusing on his job with the Holland side as they prepare for two more Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Koeman’s squad, who are top of Group C with five wins from six games, travel to Windsor Park on Saturday to face Northern Ireland before welcoming winless Estonia to Amsterdam on Tuesday.
