Unai Emery’s influence, Mesut Ozil’s resurgence and January transfers: Arsenal live Q&A

It’s not a question of the players’ loyalty to Emery

When it comes to professional football I don’t really subscribe to the thought that players don’t play for their managers. For me, I think it comes down to how the manager has been setting up the team and how well he has been getting his ideas across to the players.

Over the course of this season, Unai Emery has been using various systems and I don’t think this has helped the players at all.

For the most part he was using a 4-3-3, dabbled with a midfield diamond and then switched to the back three a few weeks ago. To get the best out of his players I firmly believe that Emey should just have more conviction in his decisions both on and off the pitch.

Rather than changing the shape of his team as a defence mechanism, settle on a tried and trusted system and stick with it. When he decided to revert to the back three, I wasn’t against it, what I did find weird, however, was that Arsenal remained passive in the game.

Whatever system Emery chooses, he will need to drill how he wants it to be implemented into his players and become more consistent in his messages. When it comes to professional football I don’t really subscribe to the thought that players don’t play for their managers.
