Harry Maguire insists England duo Raheem Sterling and Joe Gomez talking as normal again | Football | Sport

England defender Harry Maguire has said that Raheem Sterling and Harry Maguire are ‘talking again’ following their physical dispute at St George’s Park on Monday.

Sterling was axed from England’s team to play Montenegro at Wembley on Thursday for his part in the incident.

The Manchester City forward reportedly attempted to grab Gomez around the neck just a day after the two got into a shoving match during Sterling’s side’s clash with Liverpool, which they lost.

Southgate had the FA release a statement explaining the situation, before Gomez and Sterling were pictured laughing in training together on Tuesday.

And Maguire has confirmed that both players are talking to each other again, following an apology from Sterling after the incident.

“I think Gareth has said that it is his decision,” Maguire said.

“As players we have moved on, Joe and Raheem are talking now, so it’s good for the team to move on and it’s really important to get the three points tomorrow.

“Everybody mixes, I think you have seen how good the unity in the squad has been over the last couple of years.

“The squad has grown together and we will keep on growing. There are definitely no cliques.”

England need a point from their final two games against Montenegro and Kosovo to qualify for the 2020 European Championships.

“I think as players we have a job and we have got a big game tomorrow night,” Maguire added.

“We are trying to qualify for the Euros, we are solely focused on that now. We have moved on from it.

“It is really important that we put on a performance tomorrow night and get the qualification which we have all wanted.

“It is not ultimately our decision on the punishment of Raheem.”
